Caine’s Arcade Part 2 – Sharing the Joy of Imagination

What better way to end this blog challenge than to spread some joy.

This video is part 2 of the Caine’s Arcade short film.  It will fill you with awe at what has been created worldwide.   The film has inspired a wave of cardboard creativity and caused the filmmaker to create the Imagination Foundation to foster creativity in more kids, and a Global Cardboard Challenge culminating in a Global Day of Play.

Don’t miss this film.  It’s speaks directly to my heart and brought tears to my eyes and much joy.

What are you doing to support children’s imaginations?

It’s been a pleasure to blog with you over this past month.

The Impossible Dream – or is it?

Dreams imageDreams, we all have them, are essential to our very being.  Sometimes our children have dreams that we don’t believe in because we don’t see how they can possibly come true.  Often we try to quash those dreams because, being well-intentioned for our children, we don’t want them to be disappointed. However, what we end up doing with our good intentions is quashing their confidence and injuring their spirit in ways we may never recognize.

When I worked with teens in foster care I had a client who wanted to spend the rest of his life skateboarding.  He carried his skateboard with him wherever he went and took every opportunity to ride it.  He dreamed of being a professional skateboarder even though he was uncoordinated and had very little skill.   He also had several major mental health issues that made it likely that he would have significant difficulty finding and holding a job.

While it was not likely that he would ever master skateboarding, his dream gave him a reason to get up in the morning.  Rather than take that away from him, I encouraged him to find other things that he could do related to skateboards.  I suggested that it might be a good way to earn some money while developing his skating ability.

I conducted a skill assessment and discovered that he had some ability in drawing.  I encouraged him to create skateboard art.  He decided to create unique art to decorate the skateboard with.  He made several designs and with my assistance, we contacted a company that makes skateboards and they liked his designs so much that they bought all of them.  He then had the idea to make designs to silkscreen on tee shirts and created a thriving business as a graphic designer of skateboarding art.

During this time, this young man found a confidence that he didn’t have before.  He started believing that he could not only take care of himself financially, but that he could have a successful business and therefore a successful life.  I watched as his self-esteem blossomed and he grew in many ways, including taking an active part in managing his mental health issues.

Our children are capable of amazing things if we support them in their dreams or even with just their ideas.  There are many stories of teens creating million dollar businesses because their parents supported them.  One young women created a line of greeting cards for teens because she and her friends used to complain they couldn’t find cards that made sense for their age.  A major greeting card company paid her millions for her designs.  Another young man didn’t like using scented candles in glass jars because he thought they were too feminine; his parents supported his idea to create more masculine scented candles in cans which he calls Man Cans.  At 19 years old he is now a millionaire CEO of his own company.

What impossible dreams do your children have that you can encourage and support them in?  With a little thought it isn’t difficult to help them find ways to keep that dream alive by encouraging things that they can do related to their passions.  In doing that, you are raising happy, confident kids who aren’t afraid to follow their passions and create the life of their dreams.

The Six Enemies of Greatness (and Happiness)

Today I want to share a post that was originally published on the Forbes.com blog in 2012 and was written by Jessica Hagy.  It is so simple and to the point and makes a lot of sense.  I wish I had written it, but at least I can share it with you.

These six factors can erode the grandest of plans and the noblest of intentions. They can turn visionaries into paper-pushers and wide-eyed dreamers into shivering, weeping balls of regret. Beware!

1 Availability

1) Availability

We often settle for what’s available, and what’s available isn’t always great. “Because it was there,” is an okay reason to climb a mountain, but not a very good reason to take a job or a free sample at the supermarket.

2 Ignorance

2) Ignorance

If we don’t know how to make something great, we simply won’t. If we don’t know that greatness is possible, we won’t bother attempting it. All too often, we literally do not know any better than good enough.

3 Committees

3) Committees

Nothing destroys a good idea faster than a mandatory consensus. The lowest common denominator is never a high standard.

4

4) Comfort

Why pursue greatness when you’ve already got 324 channels and a recliner? Pass the dip and forget about your grand designs.

5 Momentum

5) Momentum

If you’ve been doing what you’re doing for years and it’s not-so-great, you are in a rut. Many people refer to these ruts as careers.

6 Passivity

6) Passivity

There’s a difference between being agreeable and agreeing to everything. Trust the little internal voice that tells you, “this is a bad idea.”

Empower Yourself for Success with the Power Pose

Body language affects how others see us, and it can also change how we see ourselves.  Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

I had an important sales meeting recently and watched this video and practiced the power pose and I can tell you that I felt ready for that presentation and really rocked it.

Amy Cuddy’s strategy can be applied in almost any situation in your life or business or where you need to increase your confidence and have a power boost.  Try this next time you have to give a talk or a presentation and see if it doesn’t work for you like it worked for me.

Not Having Passion in Your Business – The Third Mistake that Blocks Success

Passion2Passion is an important asset in business.  It is the fuel that keeps the fire burning, it is a great motivator and the energy that gets you out of bed in the morning.

Passion creates momentum.

People find it very difficult to say no to passion.  Clients, prospects, and employees will all sense your passion and want to be a part of it.  Passion is contagious.

In my own experience, when the agency I worked for went bankrupt and I was unemployed, I decided that I never wanted to work for someone else ever again.  It was my time to shine and build something for myself.  I thought it would be easy to take the cumulative experience of my many years of working with youth to develop a business.  I worked hard at learning how and then structuring the business using what I know.

After a while, I discovered that I was creating all sorts of road blocks for myself.  When I stopped to analyze why that was happening, I realized that I wasn’t really excited about recreating my job as an entrepreneurial business.  I love my work, but there was a lot about the job that I didn’t like at all.

I thought long and hard about what part of my job I really loved and when I hit on the answer to that, my whole being changed and I felt energized and excited about moving forward.  Now when I talk to people about what I do, they almost always remark about the passion they feel I have for my work.

If you are just starting out or have been trying to get your business up and running for awhile, it might serve you well to take some time and figure out if you love what you are doing.  If not, try to focus in on the aspects of your work that you love and build your business around that.  You’ll find satisfaction and success a lot faster that way.

Book Recommendation: Success is a Decision; Leaders Create the Life They Want to Live

3d-cover-web-croppedI am so pleased to tell you about this fabulous book created by my friend, Dr. Linette Montae (formerly Linette Daniels) of EmpowerMoreYouth.org and her very talented daughter, Danette Nixon of EmpoweringYouthForSuccess.com.  Together they are known as The Youth Success Duo.

Success is a Decision; Leaders Create the Life They Want to Live was designed to help tweens and teens learn to think things through, make good decisions, set goals, develop problem solving skills and become self-empowered.  In other words, empower them to develop a success mindset.  If you know me at all, you know that I am about developing a positive mindset, an entrepreneur mindset in my case.  The success mindset is very important to an entrepreneur so this book is a natural for me to recommend.

This book isn’t for reading  – it’s food for thought.  There is a quote for each day of the year followed by two questions.  The first question on each page is “What does this quote mean to me?”  The question is followed by space to write a response.

The second question varies from page to page.  Here’s an example – the quote for July 13 is, “People with goals succeed because they know where they are going.” Earl Nightengale.

The two questions are “What does this quote mean to me?” and “What is the consequence if I don’t follow this quote?”

Other questions include “what am I committed to. . .” “how can I apply. . .” “what have I noticed. . .”

These are questions designed to make the reader think about what the quote means and how it might apply to them; how they can use the wisdom from the quote in their daily life.

These quotes were hand-picked from hundreds of quotes these two ladies read through.   Each one was deliberately chosen because it conveyed a great message, core value or life skill concept and is meant to provide young people with deep thoughts to ponder and figure out how they will benefit if they apply the message to their own life.

When reading through the book, I found myself answering the question so you might want to order two copies, one for the young person in your life and one for yourself.  You can purchase this book and learn about their other products in the store at their website, http://empoweringyouthforsuccess.com/store/.

Inspiration Sunday Part 2

So I just realized that I posted Sunday’s article on Saturday.  Well, it was Sunday in other places in the world already.  Anyway, I decided to use this mistake to catch up as I was a post behind schedule in the blog challenge.

Rather than write a new article, I’m going to go with another Sunday inspiration and that will put me back on track.

This one highlights the differences between successful and unsuccessful people in a way that makes sense in a basic way.

I want to apologize to the creator of this graphic.  I found it on Facebook and didn’t realize that it didn’t have a credit on the graphic and now I can’t find it again to see who created it.  Sorry.  I’ll be happy to provide the credit when I find it.

Planning a Telesummit

Two days ago I decided to have a telesummit.  I’m preparing to launch my coaching certification program soon and thought this might be a great lead in to start the launch.

I made this declaration in Adam Urbanski’s Navigator course and Adam immediately said, “name it now, find someone to get an optin page up for you and start promoting this today.”

Okay.  I don’t move quite as fast as Adam does.  I am doing what he suggested except it isn’t happening that quickly.

I chose a title immediately though, The Youth Empowerment Telesummit.  And I have started contacting people to “enroll” them to participate as presenters.  So far I have some very solid commitments from others who work with youth in one capacity or another.  I am blown away by those who have accepted.

Tomorrow I will begin work on the optin page and get that up as quickly as possible.  And I will reach out to extend more invitations to participate.

Writing the copy for the page will be my biggest challenge so I’m going to have to spend some time researching other optin pages for other telesummits so I can see what they are including.  I have to collect bios on the presenters and their photos and a list of things they will consent to give away to listeners.  The freebies they provide will bring listeners to their website to sign up to their mail lists.  It’s a win-win situation.

The calls will be live via freeconferencecallhd.com.  There will be either one or two opportunities to listen to the replays, then the interviews go into the vault for safekeeping until such time as I repurpose them into a CD package.

It isn’t really that difficult to create a telesummit; it is time consuming.  And it’s a great way to practice your “enrollment skills” by having to talk to people about participating.  I find that people are eager to be involved in your projects if they feel your passion.  If you are genuine, it’s contagious.

I’m quite happy with how much has been accomplished in just two days and I’m fairly certain that these presenters and I will remain connected and be doing more things together in the future.

Have you ever had a telesummit?

What was your experience in putting it together?

Do you have any suggestions or advice that you think will be helpful?
