The Six Enemies of Greatness (and Happiness)

Today I want to share a post that was originally published on the Forbes.com blog in 2012 and was written by Jessica Hagy.  It is so simple and to the point and makes a lot of sense.  I wish I had written it, but at least I can share it with you.

These six factors can erode the grandest of plans and the noblest of intentions. They can turn visionaries into paper-pushers and wide-eyed dreamers into shivering, weeping balls of regret. Beware!

1 Availability

1) Availability

We often settle for what’s available, and what’s available isn’t always great. “Because it was there,” is an okay reason to climb a mountain, but not a very good reason to take a job or a free sample at the supermarket.

2 Ignorance

2) Ignorance

If we don’t know how to make something great, we simply won’t. If we don’t know that greatness is possible, we won’t bother attempting it. All too often, we literally do not know any better than good enough.

3 Committees

3) Committees

Nothing destroys a good idea faster than a mandatory consensus. The lowest common denominator is never a high standard.

4

4) Comfort

Why pursue greatness when you’ve already got 324 channels and a recliner? Pass the dip and forget about your grand designs.

5 Momentum

5) Momentum

If you’ve been doing what you’re doing for years and it’s not-so-great, you are in a rut. Many people refer to these ruts as careers.

6 Passivity

6) Passivity

There’s a difference between being agreeable and agreeing to everything. Trust the little internal voice that tells you, “this is a bad idea.”

Interestingly, I find that graphics tell a different story. No, they don’t disagree with the general tenor, but they render the 6 considerations closer to 10 or 12!

I would say that the graphics did their job then. Isn’t that the point of a picture – to enhance a topic and stimulate thought? Thank you for reading and leaving your comments Roy.

That availability point is a great one. They all are, of course, but the first is so easy to forget about as you go through trance moments in your day (or week, or year). I appreciate that she mentions committees too.

Thank you for stopping by and reading and commenting, Nanette. The committee thing is a big one that used to get me. For myself, I feel that’s just a moment of doubt that I need a lot of opinions. I try to avoid that now. The point about availability gets a lot of people too. Sometimes it is hard to avoid, especially for someone just starting a new business as there often isn’t the money to implement something else and you have to go with what is available.

Sharing is nice, but like seeing the opinion of people who share, even it’s a small comment.
