The Six Enemies of Greatness (and Happiness)

Today I want to share a post that was originally published on the Forbes.com blog in 2012 and was written by Jessica Hagy.  It is so simple and to the point and makes a lot of sense.  I wish I had written it, but at least I can share it with you.

These six factors can erode the grandest of plans and the noblest of intentions. They can turn visionaries into paper-pushers and wide-eyed dreamers into shivering, weeping balls of regret. Beware!

1 Availability

1) Availability

We often settle for what’s available, and what’s available isn’t always great. “Because it was there,” is an okay reason to climb a mountain, but not a very good reason to take a job or a free sample at the supermarket.

2 Ignorance

2) Ignorance

If we don’t know how to make something great, we simply won’t. If we don’t know that greatness is possible, we won’t bother attempting it. All too often, we literally do not know any better than good enough.

3 Committees

3) Committees

Nothing destroys a good idea faster than a mandatory consensus. The lowest common denominator is never a high standard.

4

4) Comfort

Why pursue greatness when you’ve already got 324 channels and a recliner? Pass the dip and forget about your grand designs.

5 Momentum

5) Momentum

If you’ve been doing what you’re doing for years and it’s not-so-great, you are in a rut. Many people refer to these ruts as careers.

6 Passivity

6) Passivity

There’s a difference between being agreeable and agreeing to everything. Trust the little internal voice that tells you, “this is a bad idea.”

Empower Yourself for Success with the Power Pose

Body language affects how others see us, and it can also change how we see ourselves.  Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

I had an important sales meeting recently and watched this video and practiced the power pose and I can tell you that I felt ready for that presentation and really rocked it.

Amy Cuddy’s strategy can be applied in almost any situation in your life or business or where you need to increase your confidence and have a power boost.  Try this next time you have to give a talk or a presentation and see if it doesn’t work for you like it worked for me.

Search for Your Passion by Asking Yourself These Ten Questions

passion3Yesterday we looked at why it is important to build your business around your passion.  It’s this passion for your work that is your rudder and provides the motivation to keep moving forward.

Here are ten questions to start you on your passion quest. If money were not an object, what would you do all day long?

Is there anything that makes you feel really good while you do it?

What activities are you doing when the hours just fly by?

How could you help other people by doing what you love?

What contribution are you here to make?

What difference do you feel you were put on the planet to make?

What specific group of people (niche) can your passion serve?

How will you make your mark in the world?

 What will your legacy be?

Were you able to answer all the ten questions?  Do they give you any insights as to what you are passionate about that you can create a business with?

Not Having Passion in Your Business – The Third Mistake that Blocks Success

Passion2Passion is an important asset in business.  It is the fuel that keeps the fire burning, it is a great motivator and the energy that gets you out of bed in the morning.

Passion creates momentum.

People find it very difficult to say no to passion.  Clients, prospects, and employees will all sense your passion and want to be a part of it.  Passion is contagious.

In my own experience, when the agency I worked for went bankrupt and I was unemployed, I decided that I never wanted to work for someone else ever again.  It was my time to shine and build something for myself.  I thought it would be easy to take the cumulative experience of my many years of working with youth to develop a business.  I worked hard at learning how and then structuring the business using what I know.

After a while, I discovered that I was creating all sorts of road blocks for myself.  When I stopped to analyze why that was happening, I realized that I wasn’t really excited about recreating my job as an entrepreneurial business.  I love my work, but there was a lot about the job that I didn’t like at all.

I thought long and hard about what part of my job I really loved and when I hit on the answer to that, my whole being changed and I felt energized and excited about moving forward.  Now when I talk to people about what I do, they almost always remark about the passion they feel I have for my work.

If you are just starting out or have been trying to get your business up and running for awhile, it might serve you well to take some time and figure out if you love what you are doing.  If not, try to focus in on the aspects of your work that you love and build your business around that.  You’ll find satisfaction and success a lot faster that way.

Not Getting Clear – The Second Mistake in Business that Blocks Success

ClarityThe second most common mistake new solopreneurs and small business owners make is not having clarity around various aspects of their business.  Without having a clear vision of who, what, where and when regarding your business, you will most likely spend a lot of time marketing and trying to get your message out and not attracting the people you should be targeting.

It’s fairly easy to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit.  Having a clear, distinct, mapped out path is the hard part.  At times you may feel as if you are not disciplined.  More times than not, it is an uncertainty on your destination.  If you did know where you were going, you probably would know what you had to get done.  If you do not know where you are going, no road will get you there.  Ask yourself, what can I do better than anyone in the world?

Define what you want with absolute clarity – You must know what you want before you can go after it. More than just wanting a goal or ideal you must want and accept the feelings, emotions, thoughts, freedom and/or obligations that will certainly accompany your goals.  Begin to think about why you want this thing, what it will mean to you.

  • What will meeting this goal look like, feel like, and how will it change
    your life?
  • Do you know what it will take to meet this objective?
  • What are the costs?

Many times people want something but only think about the good things that will come from having attaining it.  You must be very honest about the sacrifice and hard work that will be required to attain this goal.  Without question everything worthwhile will require sacrifice.

Take the time in your business to define your goals, to create a visual of your end result, to identify your target market and more.

Brian Tracy, one of the world’s leading authorities on personal and business success says this about clarity, “Clarity – Eighty percent of success comes from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you don’t.”

Are you clear on what’s at the end of your road?
