Holy Twilight Zone Batman

So, the very first day of the new year I crossed over into the Twilight Zone. I thought I was being so good uploading a new freebie at my site and sending out an email announcing that the old give away was being taken down at midnight.

I sent myself a test email for each announcement, they looked good and the links worked just fine.  I doubled checked at Aweber to make sure the broadcast times were correct and it appeared to be all systems go.  Yay!

Here’s where it gets strange.  I received in my inbox a previous email that I sent months ago.  I did not schedule this email to be sent.  I received it at both of my email addresses that are registered with Aweber.  I went back into Aweber and saw no indication that the old email was sent.  Hmm, I’m scratching my head about now.  And no, I wasn’t drinking to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Okay, midnight is approaching, they are getting ready to drop the ball in Times Square and all is well with the world.  I waited until midnight to take down the old freebie and connect the new one.  The correct email went out and all seemed well, I even retested the link.  This was at my Outlook email.  Later I checked the inbox on AOL and the email was there.  For some reason, I tested the same link in the same email blast at AOL and it didn’t work.  Uh oh.  Now what?

I could not figure this out.  Before I knew it, it was 3 am.  I decided to check my email one more time and found a friend awake who was online.  I connected via chat and asked that she check the link in my email that came to her.  She was on her cell phone and said the link did not work.  The link on her phone and at my AOL showed a corrupted link.  She booted her laptop and checked her email and lo and behold, the link works just fine, thank you.

After finally getting some sleep, I start the day checking the email to see if anything else was amiss.  I have only two emails about the broadcast I sent out.

One of the emails was an unsubscribe notice from someone who left an angry sounding comment that the old give away was gone before midnight even though I said it would be available until midnight, and the other link didn’t work so they were unsubscribing.

To say I was hesitant to open the other email is an understatement.  Thankfully it was a friendly email letting me know of the problem.  After several emails back and forth, it appears that it might be an issue on Firefox rather than AOL.

Like any good business person who wants to provide exemplary customer service, I sent an apology letter to the person who unsubscribed and provided both of the give aways.  I have not had any comment back.  I also sent another email broadcast to my subscribers just to be sure.  Here’s where I experienced firsthand a key lesson in marketing – make sure your subject headings have a great title.

The email I sent announcing the new freebie had an ordinary title with the name of the PDF.  The open rate was nothing to write home about.  After I discovered that I had taken a trip through the Twilight Zone, I sent out another broadcast with the title, “Holy Twilight Zone Batman.”   The open rate tripled, how cool is that?

I have two take aways from this experience:

  • Always have a catchy title, not necessarily the name of your product.  What good is the most fantastic program if people don’t open your email?  Get them to open it, then you tell them what it’s about
  • Hire an email, campaign manager and don’t do this myself, anymore, ever again.

I know this has been a long story, sorry.  But anyone who knows me will tell you -I’m really wordy and can talk for hours.

Happy New Year.  And in case you haven’t picked up your copy of Julia Neiman’s 2 Step Reality Check to Discover and Overcome the Hurdles That Stand Between You and Your Dreams, you just have to enter your name and email in the box at the top right hand side of this page.  Unless, of course, you are already a subscriber, then you already received the download link in an email yesterday.  Otherwise, take your chances of crossing over into the Twilight Zone with me.

I told you I was wordy.

Great point about the email titles, Julia. They do make a significant difference to open rates.
As for unsubscribes – well my personal view is ignore them. If someone wants to unsubscribe over something so trivial as a broken link or an offer they missed, they’re not that interested in what you have to say anyway. Technology isn’t perfect, glitches happen and sometimes we have no control over them when they do.

Thank you for reading my post and leaving your comment Jan. I am not usually bothered by unsubscribes, afterall, I unsubscribe from other blogs so I know it isn’t personal. This one comment from this person though felt mean and it was the first day of the year, I didn’t want to start the year off with a bunch of negative comments. Thankfully, that was the only one. And mess up or not, that person’s attitude is not my responsibility and I didn’t take it personally, I just didn’t want to let that kind of energy in on my new year’s day.

With that said, I need to get on the phone with Aweber because I’m hearing that the link in the actual confirm letter doesn’t work so some people are not receiving the pdf after they subscribe. The technology gods are just messing with me to sharpen my skills :-).

Malika Bourne - January 2, 2013

I don’t know about you, but I got a new computer and all of my Twitter reply and more were going to spam/ junk. something like that could have happened.

A few yeaers back I was tryign the broadcast thig. OOPS! Myfriend traded phoes with me. I did my first broadcast to find out the darn phone did not work. My broadcast was silient.
What I am saying is, you aren’t alone. It happens. did you give the info for your broad cast?

Thank you for your supportive comment Malika. I do know I’m not alone and it wasn’t even being in the Twilight Zone that bothered me, it was more that one unsubscriber’s negative attitude that put me off. I did not want that kind of negative energy in my new year’s day. Anyway, there are more issues to resolve so I need to get Aweber on the phone.

OMG Julia, I am so sad to hear what you went through as you entered the world of email marketing. I had a similar experience when I first began using an autoresponder. I finally figured out that I had to click the “queue” button to actually “send” the broadcast messages (LOL). Unfortunately, I learned a LOT of hard autoresponder lessons that I am still trying to clean up – 2 years later.

Although I am a huge proponent of outsourcing, I equally push my clients to learn “how” to do certain things so they are not held hostage by lack of knowledge. I saw this happen so much with new clients that I created a course called “30 Days to Autoresponder Success” which gave them the skills needed to do the task and more cost effectively outsource the task.

I wrote a blog post about “outsourcing” that you may find helpful as you make your decision http://bigbusinessresults.com/outsourcing/

Thank you Linette. Happy New Year! No need to be sad though, it’s all a learning experience. I also had to learn about the “queue” button. I first pushed the send now button and thought that took care of it. And I wondered why I didn’t even get one response.

I love that you took your lessons and created a course. I do know the basics of Aweber and am fairly proud of how far I’ve come. This time, it wasn’t actually something I did. I know this because for some people, the link worked just fine. I will, however, read your article. Thank you that link. I’m looking forward to talking with you soon.

shawn - January 2, 2013

LOL Julia. Love your story. Hate that this happened to you. My Firefox has been acting funky since Christmas time. Today I am not able to connect to Twitter from it. Running Youtube videos hasn’t work for awhile. Grr. Thank you for the reminder of great titles.

I think that Firefox is one of the problems, Shawn, however the fact that some people can’t get the product once they confirm is an issue that is probably an Aweber issue. Firefox doesn’t seem to load pages properly sometimes and my saved log in information doesn’t always appear on the screen. That means I either have to know the password by heart or have it written down then be able to find it.

Maybe this all means that technology issues will be over early in the year and I focus on getting stuff done and being creative :-). Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Nanette Levin - January 2, 2013

Glad you were able to get this all worked out Julia. Some entry into New Year’s for you. I never understand people getting nasty about something you’re offering for free. I figure these aren’t good client prospects for me anyway (I learned a long time ago it doesn’t pay to work with difficult people). Keep up the good work.

Thank you for always being supportive Nanette, I very much appreciate it. It isn’t all worked out though. Just as I was getting ready to go to sleep last night, or, rather early this morning, I got a chat message from someone who wasn’t able to access the product using the link after she confirmed her registration. I agree, this person would not have been a good client.

Chef William - January 2, 2013

Wow, I love watching old reruns of the Twilight Zone when I do watch television, which isn’t much, but I sure don’t want to cross over into it. And never with any of the people I connect with online. I do like the idea of a catchy title, but I’m not ready to hire people just yet. Perhaps I should rethink that, as I have a product coming out in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the idea.

The original Twilight Zone is in the top two of my favorite TV Shows ever! I don’t mind being the T-Zone once in a while. I’m always open to an unusual experience, however, this is one I could have lived without. I do have a fabulous VA without whose help it would have taken me a lot longer to get the book published, however, she doesn’t use Aweber so she has to learn it just like I have been. I’ve got to hire someone who is familiar with Aweber.

Get help Chef William. You only need to hire someone by the hour and if you are organized, it should not take them a lot of time to get the job done.

Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued support.

Karen Guttridge - January 2, 2013

Oh the wonders of technology – brilliant…when it works! Although I haven’t experienced the same problem as you(yet!) I have spent many a long night struggling to get processes to operate correctly! We get there in the end 🙂

    Julia - January 2, 2013

Tenacity and determination, Karen, that’s what it takes. All this stuff shouldn’t be so complicated should it?

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your comment. Happy New Year.

Susan Joy Schleef - January 2, 2013

Good stuff for me – I just sent my first email to my list, scheduled to go early this morning and I received my copy right on time! But I did struggle last night to get it all set up correctly so I can relate.

    Julia - January 2, 2013

Thank you for reading and commenting Susan. Be sure to check those links in the email that you received. Won’t it be nice to get past the struggle?

Lynn Dorman - January 2, 2013

Major giggles when reading this…”stuff” happens! And as for the ones who canceled due to bad link or feeling you lied – they aren’t people you want on your lists anyway. [They don’t understand glitches :)]

I’m so glad you had the giggles Lynn, that was my intention. Stuff does happen and I don’t sweat them often. I had just hoped to start the New Year without a glitch. Oh well. Thank you for your ongoing support.

R.Whosit - January 2, 2013

Wow! Thank you for sharing the entire story, regardless of length. I didn’t think it was too long. Maybe I’m wordy also! But, thank you! I’m getting ready to send out my first Aweber marketing material at the end of this month and am terrified something like that will happen to me. It’s nice to see so many comments and your support system. I’m crossing my fingers my marketing manager can handle anything that comes. I am a virtual assistant, and I have a virtual assistant! Wish I was great at everything, but since I’m not I’ve gotten a team to help. Good luck in your future endeavors!

    Julia - January 2, 2013

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your comment R.Whosit. Happy New Year. Good on you for having a VA. I have to find someone who is great with Aweber. I no longer want to spend the time to learn new systems and fix these kinds of issues. I have to finish my 2nd book and get my program ready for launch and I start Adam Urbanski’s Navigator Course next week and have lots and lots of work to do. Whew.

Best of luck with your very first Aweber adventure. I wish you great success.

Rosemary Cunningham - January 2, 2013

Love the email titles comments! I must be more imaginative with mine! I remember “Bowen for baby elephants” once got a good opening rate!

    Julia - January 2, 2013

Hi Rosemary, thanking your reading and taking time to comment. Imagination is key! I really have to start thinking up crazy titles. They don’t even have to be about the content, which is what I learned from this.

Harriet Stack - January 2, 2013

Great story, thanks for sharing but sorry to hear your new year started with a bit of stress. I love the catchy subject line too!

Nice to meet you Harriet, thank you for taking time to leave your comment. It wasn’t really that stressful, just another reminder that my mostly right-brained self should not take on technology. I need to find a VA that knows Aweber. I have a fabulous VA, but she doesn’t use Aweber as a rule. And catchy titles are a good business practice.

Mercedes - January 3, 2013

I found you via the blog challenge fb page. Good point about the titles; that is one of my writing goals this year. My titles (emails or blog posts) have never been great.

One thing I’ve learned in Internet marketing is…

If something can go wrong, it usually does. 🙂

Don’t sweat the unsubscribes. You’ll learn that happens often and it’s all a part of the process. You’ll resonate with 2 more and make up for the one you lost. So you gain! 🙂

I always had this mindset in school – Lose 1 friend, gain 2 more. Worked for me then and it works usually the same way in business.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your comment Bonnie. I don’t usually sweat unsubscribes, I hardly notice them. I did find the comment with the angry tone unpleasant, mainly because I didn’t want to start my year with a comment like that. Just another lesson that we can’t control things :-).
