Not Getting Clear – The Second Mistake in Business that Blocks Success

ClarityThe second most common mistake new solopreneurs and small business owners make is not having clarity around various aspects of their business.  Without having a clear vision of who, what, where and when regarding your business, you will most likely spend a lot of time marketing and trying to get your message out and not attracting the people you should be targeting.

It’s fairly easy to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit.  Having a clear, distinct, mapped out path is the hard part.  At times you may feel as if you are not disciplined.  More times than not, it is an uncertainty on your destination.  If you did know where you were going, you probably would know what you had to get done.  If you do not know where you are going, no road will get you there.  Ask yourself, what can I do better than anyone in the world?

Define what you want with absolute clarity – You must know what you want before you can go after it. More than just wanting a goal or ideal you must want and accept the feelings, emotions, thoughts, freedom and/or obligations that will certainly accompany your goals.  Begin to think about why you want this thing, what it will mean to you.

  • What will meeting this goal look like, feel like, and how will it change
    your life?
  • Do you know what it will take to meet this objective?
  • What are the costs?

Many times people want something but only think about the good things that will come from having attaining it.  You must be very honest about the sacrifice and hard work that will be required to attain this goal.  Without question everything worthwhile will require sacrifice.

Take the time in your business to define your goals, to create a visual of your end result, to identify your target market and more.

Brian Tracy, one of the world’s leading authorities on personal and business success says this about clarity, “Clarity – Eighty percent of success comes from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you don’t.”

Are you clear on what’s at the end of your road?

Leverage Bigger Profits with a Charitable Mission

Having a big mission interwoven with your financial goals also provides a more profound “why” for what you’re doing in business. It gets your team, customers and community involved, helping your bottom line grow faster than it would have if you were on your own.”  Yanik Silver, YoungEntrepreneur.com

Leverage CharityHaving a greater mission and building your business around that mission brings deeper levels of satisfaction to your work and a stronger potential for bigger profits.  It allows for passion which I believe is an essential element of a successful business and life.  Your mission should reflect the “why” you are in business.

My why is that I believe that every young person deserves to have big dreams and the opportunity to make those dreams come true.

My business was conceived by my desire to help teens and young adults become economically self-sufficient.  I found a program online that I enrolled in to learn how to build an internet business and realized somewhere in the middle of this program that this is what I wanted my youth-centered business to be.  With the approval and partnership with the creator of that program, The Monetize Your Passion Blueprint: Empowering Young Entrepreneurs program was born.

The program trains coaches, teachers, life skills professional and other service providers who work with teens and young adults to teach them entrepreneurial core values, habits and business skills.  The charitable element of this mission is to provide training at no cost to volunteers who work with homeless youth to help those kids start a business and get off the streets and transform their lives.  We have also donated the program to a group who works with young women in Uganda and as a pre-release program for young people coming out of prison.  Additionally, we have set aside a few scholarships for each course for qualified clients who have a similar mission and are not able to afford the program.

The internet allows you to be more creative with your business and have a wider reach and when you are passionate about what you do, you don’t actually talk business, you share your passion.  I love talking with people in Australia, England, South Africa, Rwanda, and all across America about my passionate mission.

The current trend in entrepreneurial business is to break down the barriers between work and lifestyle and value-boosting activities.  A business can leverage charitable causes at the same time it boosts business.  The bottom line is that the more impact you create, the more joy and happiness you create, the more profits you’ll generate.

Making Difficult Choices in Business

choicesSometimes we get so busy doing things that we think are necessary for our business and often they are.  However, there comes a time when we have to step back and ask ourselves these questions:

Are the things I am doing enhancing my business or taking away from it?

Is doing these things the best use of my time?

What can I be doing that would be more effective?

Right now I have just launched one product – The Youth Empowerment Telesummit Downloads and CDs which are also being posted at JV Zoo, I am launching my new book, Pick From the Passion: Empowering Young Entrepreneurs to Start a Business next week, and shortly after that I am launching my new year-long program, The Monetize Your Passion Blueprint – Empowering Young Entrepreneurs.

I’m very busy writing copy, posting on social media, and recruiting affiliates to help me sell these products and blogging.  I am also an affiliate for other people who are launching their new things right now as well.  I’ve been promoting some of them like crazy because, after all, I would earn a commission on anything they sell as a result of my referral.

Today I had to step back and ask myself if this is a good use of my time?  And actually, it isn’t.  I did have a few referrals sign up for a free webinar I’ve been promoting and hopefully they will sign on to the paid course that follows or buy some product from the seller.  It’s great product, fabulous information too, but the majority of the folks that follow me aren’t looking for this information, so the chances are that they won’t buy.  Still, I couldn’t say no to this promotion.

Another friend in an entirely different field – health – is promoting her new program and she’s been promoting for me, so reciprocating is a no brainer.  Besides, most of my followers are interested in health and how to reduce stress, as am I.  That makes more sense to me, so watch for these promotions because I’ll be posting them soon.

The answer to my questions is that doing other promotions right now is NOT the best use of my time for two reasons; one because it’s taking time away from creating copy and planning my own promotions, and two because all this work may or may not yield any return on the investment I’m making with my time.

My dilemma though, is that I can’t say no to these folks who are asking me to help because they help me.  So, I’m still promoting and hoping that will pay off in commissions, and I’m working longer hours and am more tired working on my own projects.

There aren’t always easy choices even when the answers to our questions tell us we should be doing something different.

How to Develop Entrepreneurial Thinking Skills and a Marketing Savvy Mindset

Today’s post is reprinted with permission from Adam Urbanski
Millionaire Marketing Mentor

Business HandshakeThis past weekend I received a disturbing message from a dear friend. His business wasn’t generating all the income he needed. He’s exhausted all savings, started depleting credit card reserves and badly needed money to pay this month’s mortgage... Ouch! I wish I knew sooner…

Whether it’s pride or just human nature that keeps professionals from asking for help sooner, it’s just plain silly to keep “toughing it out” when there are so many strategies for generating new business fast.

You see, there is really no shortage of new business, there is only a shortage of knowledge how to get this business.

So if you are one of those professional folks who could use a few hundred bucks to help out with this month’s mortgage, here are a few strategies to get your business buzzing with new customers or clients:

1. Get on the phone!

Pick up the phone and call everyone you know. Contact all clients, prospects, friends and family. Make sure they all know what you do, who you are looking for as a client, and how to “give you away.”

2. Get out and meet people!

Sitting in the office, shuffling paperwork and piddling around with emails will not take you far enough fast enough. You need to be talking to people who can buy your product or service. Set a goal of how many people you want to see in person every day and find ways to meet that goal!

3. Stop competing and start leveraging!

Instead of being mad at your competitors for stealing all your business, approach them and offer to help out. At times we all get projects that are too big, too small, or too “whatever” for us to take on.

Contact your competitors and ask if they would be willing to outsource their “too whatever” jobs to you – so that you can both make some dough. (Yeah, I know, it sounds like eating some humble pie – but hey, I think it beats living under a bridge 😉

4. Ask for referrals!

You should be doing this anyway. Have a conversation with all clients (past and current) and help them think of people they can introduce you to right away. Oh, and don’t forget – just because a prospect says “no”, it doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t know someone who would gladly say “yes”.

5. Crank up your follow-up!

Do you have a stack of cards from people who turned you down once before? Maybe it’s time to resurrect them. Reach out to your “old” prospects – even if you previously gave up on them. Give them a call, send them a postcard or an article, and give them a special reason to say “yes” now!

6. Forgive your ex-clients!

Frequently ex-clients realize they made a mistake by getting involved with another vendor – but they are too embarrassed to admit it. Give them a way to gracefully come back to you and many will do it.

7. Catch a COI!

Form an alliance with Centers of Influence who can introduce to a large number of prospects at once and give you instant credibility. Well thought out and carefully executed strategic alliances with COI can infuse your business with all the new sales you can handle.

8. Educate, educate, educate!

Regardless of what business you are in you can always find things your clients and prospects would appreciate learning from you. How-to tips, informative case studies, industry reports – those are all great tools that can easily attract prospects hungry for your “stuff.”

9. Start thinking strategically!

If you are having trouble attracting enough new business, the marketing tactics above should help you get things hopping, but to achieve a long-term sustainable success you’ll need to address your marketing on a strategic level.

Identify or re-evaluate your ideal target market, clearly describe the benefits your product or service provides, create a compelling marketing message, re-evaluate your business model and re-define your methods of delivering your product or service, etc., etc.

10. Stop getting and start giving!

When you are in the “how I can GET a client” mode, you are focused on you – and that doesn’t make you very attractive. Shift your thinking to “how I can GIVE clients more VALUE” and you’ll become an irresistible client magnet!

11. GET HELP!

When you are in the midst of a demanding situation you cannot always have the clarity needed to creating solutions. Collaborate with a successful associate, start your own board of advisors or a mastermind group, or hire a marketing mentor to pull you out of the quicksand. Remember, when time and money count – you can’t afford the expensive “trial and error” learning curve!

Oh, and one final thought – now that you are done reading – get busy implementing!

I Am on a Mission to Empower Young Entreprenuers

MYP Workbook CoverI’m doing something really scary for me; I’m starting a global movement to end youth unemployment.  That’s right, GLOBAL!

With all of my heart, I believe that we need to step up and create some sort of income potential for our youth.  My friend Alan Miles of hmroomph.com wrote in my first book, 31 Powerful Lessons Empowering Teens and Young Adults to Develop an Entrepreneur Mindset,

One of the challenges of the next decade is how we’re going to create enough jobs – especially for young people.  Recession or no recession, the nature of work is changing, workforces are shrinking in the major companies, new patterns are emerging.

The most important is the growth of self-employment and new start-ups.  Already numbers in the US and across Europe are at record highs, and that’s where most of the growth in the employment market is coming from.  Some commentators predict that half the US workforce could be employed in micro-businesses by 2020.”

Alan is a human resources consultant and achievement management specialist so he knows what he speaks of and speaks of it with some insight.

I believe that is incumbent upon us as parents, teachers, life skills professionals, coaches, and mentors to empower our youth to develop an entrepreneur mindset.  We need to start in elementary school.  There are many examples of young kids, ages eight and nine and up, who have had a great idea and with the support of the adults in their life have created a successful business so it can be done.

It starts with a mindset. That is why I developed a training course for adults who either currently work with youth or want to develop a youth centered business.

My certification course, The Monetize Your Passion Blueprint – Empowering Young Entrepreneurs, includes the materials you’ll need plus weekly calls, plus personal coaching sessions with me plus a FREE FOR LIFE membership in our members forum where you and can stay connected, receive support, further training, tools and mentoring to stay on track and build a successful business.   We also provide a site for your clients to mastermind with each other and receive free training and mentorship.

There is also an optional module on how to build a youth centered business – where and how to find clients and support in doing that.

The program is suitable for anyone who works with young people whether in a classroom, through an service provider agency, in a life skills program or private coaching business, after school program, summer camp or other venue.

There is an investment required for this course.  Some might say the fee is high, however, when you realize that this one time investment provides support, masterminding and ongoing training for as long as you want it, and that part of the proceeds are funding the global movement and will train volunteers who work with homeless youth for free, then you realize that this investment is actually a bargain; a bargain not only in your own career and for your clients or students, it is an investment in economic independence for young people around the world.

The Monetize Your Passion Blueprint: Empowering Young Entrepreneurs will be launching in a few weeks.  Until that time, you are welcome to contact me at julia@julianeiman.com for more information, or check at this blog site on the services page.  Anyone who enrolls prior to the official roll out of the program will receive a huge discount.  I also have a generous affiliate opportunity so get in touch now, before the program launches and the huge discount decreases.

Join me on this global mission and together let’s have a huge, positive impact on the youth unemployment crisis.

What is Being Asked?

Question to solveI was just checking in with some of the groups I’m involved with on one of the social media sites and left with a take-away that is a great lesson for young entrepreneurs or anyone really.  Briefly, one person asked if anyone had suggestions on what skills to teach young people before they leave home to live on their own.

Immediately, as a life skills professional, I thought of at least 20 things that I could list for her.  Not wanting to repeat what others contributed, I read all of the replies.  My immediate thought was, “huh?”

Interestingly enough, not one of the replies provided what she was asking for.  Each and every person who responded gave her a list of core values that kids should have to be a good person; things like courage, perseverance, integrity, honesty and other such qualities.

“Hmmm,” I thought, I wrote a book about all these things – 31 Powerful Lessons Empowering Teens and Young Adults to Develop An Entrepreneur Mindset, yet, I didn’t get the sense that this is what the poster was asking about.  She said “skills” not values or qualities.  I had to wonder if maybe I had misunderstood what she was asking for because all of these other people were answering the same way.

Then, the poster appeared again and thanked everyone for their thoughtful answers and asked if they could now provide some simple skills like how to do laundry.  That made me laugh because I had been doubting myself and wondering if all these seemingly unrelated answers were what she was looking for.

Only one of the previous posters came back and suggested she teach them how to use a bank.  I posted my reply listing about 20 skills.

So, you are probably wondering what my take away is? It is just that you should be very sure what someone is asking for  before you answer because someone like me, who does understand, will come along behind you and wonder why you didn’t get that question before you provided an unrelated answer.  You then appear as some who is confused, unsure, or disconnected.  If you aren’t sure, ask the poster for clarification.  It’s a good lesson that we often see the world from our point of view, but that isn’t necessarily what someone else is asking for.

I think it comes down to being a good reader in the same way you need to be a good listener.  Take a moment to really read what is being asked and if what you want to say really answers the question or not.  This poster specifically asked about “skills” not values or qualities.  She was looking for answers that included teaching kids to cook, how to search for an apartment and understand a rental agreement, how to buy and care for clothes, how to access health care, and so one.

What would you have provided as an answer to her question?  Do you know the difference between skills and values?  An entrepreneur would certainly know the difference.

Book Recommendation: Success is a Decision; Leaders Create the Life They Want to Live

3d-cover-web-croppedI am so pleased to tell you about this fabulous book created by my friend, Dr. Linette Montae (formerly Linette Daniels) of EmpowerMoreYouth.org and her very talented daughter, Danette Nixon of EmpoweringYouthForSuccess.com.  Together they are known as The Youth Success Duo.

Success is a Decision; Leaders Create the Life They Want to Live was designed to help tweens and teens learn to think things through, make good decisions, set goals, develop problem solving skills and become self-empowered.  In other words, empower them to develop a success mindset.  If you know me at all, you know that I am about developing a positive mindset, an entrepreneur mindset in my case.  The success mindset is very important to an entrepreneur so this book is a natural for me to recommend.

This book isn’t for reading  – it’s food for thought.  There is a quote for each day of the year followed by two questions.  The first question on each page is “What does this quote mean to me?”  The question is followed by space to write a response.

The second question varies from page to page.  Here’s an example – the quote for July 13 is, “People with goals succeed because they know where they are going.” Earl Nightengale.

The two questions are “What does this quote mean to me?” and “What is the consequence if I don’t follow this quote?”

Other questions include “what am I committed to. . .” “how can I apply. . .” “what have I noticed. . .”

These are questions designed to make the reader think about what the quote means and how it might apply to them; how they can use the wisdom from the quote in their daily life.

These quotes were hand-picked from hundreds of quotes these two ladies read through.   Each one was deliberately chosen because it conveyed a great message, core value or life skill concept and is meant to provide young people with deep thoughts to ponder and figure out how they will benefit if they apply the message to their own life.

When reading through the book, I found myself answering the question so you might want to order two copies, one for the young person in your life and one for yourself.  You can purchase this book and learn about their other products in the store at their website, http://empoweringyouthforsuccess.com/store/.

Am I Crazy or What?

Praise for Pick from the Passion Tree – Empowering Young Entrepreneurs to Start a Business

passion tree_I am very excited to share with you some of the wonderful comments I have received for my new book, Pick from the Passion Tree – Empowering Young Entrepreneurs to Start a Business.

This book was born during an Ultimate Blog Challenge last year and it is scheduled to go to the printer this coming week and I will begin promotion shortly.  The book will be available only on my website for a while and then on Clickbank.  I might also list it with some of the larger book sellers, however, I will not list it on Kindle again.  I was not happy with the Kindle experience and the fact that you cannot do any other thing with your book while it’s on Kindle for 90 days.  The free days were a huge success, but there were no Kindle sales after that.  I did much better on my own.

Without further ado, here are the wonderful things being said about the book.

Julia is the sweetest person I know with an amazing heart and a fierce dedication to young people having the opportunity to live their dreams.  This book she has written empowers young people to get into the right mindset about becoming entrepreneurs and starting their own business.  Every young person in high school should have a copy of this book so they can have choices about their future and the opportunity to have the lifestyle they dream of.

The world is changing at an unprecedented rate.  The old adage of “get a good education, get a good job and you’ll be set for life” no longer exists.  The time is now to chart your own path and start your own business that will set the world on fire.  Julia Neiman’s, Pick from the Passion Tree, provides some great information to get you thinking and moving in the right direction.

What I like about Julia is that she marches to her own drum.  She doesn’t tell young people what to think or what to do, she empowers them to think for themselves and hands them all their own drums.  I love that she is empowering young people to become entrepreneurs.

In today’s fast pace and information overload it’s enough to give anyone a serious case of overwhelm and procrastination.  Julia helps you get your breakthrough by giving you a thorough overview, plus totally breaks it down to the basic level.  The core statement which really brought it home for me was, “When you’re searching for your passion, it’s important to pursue things that you enjoy for one reason…to find your passion, you need to dedicate yourself to a cause”.  I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially teens and young adults who need to “work out what’s important in their lives, follow their passion and set out on the entrepreneurial path, today!”

Ask and Ye Shall Receive – A Mindset

Ask and ye shall receiveI’m a big believer in the saying, “ask and ye shall receive.”  It works for me every time I need it to.  I also believe that this saying is about the law of attraction and the law of attraction is alive and well in my life.  It’s a mindset that you can develop by making it a habit.

Here’s an example of how it works:

I was talking to someone the other day about listing my books and the CD package from The Youth Empowerment Telesummit on Clickbank.  I’ve tried to list things on Clickbank twice before and messed up both times.  It’s a complicated system with a lot, a lot of rules.  It made my head spin and I let it go.

So after my conversation with my colleague, I said, “I need to find someone who can add these to Clickbank for me.”

Today I was catching up on reading the posts here in the UBC and lo and behold, Shawn Snyder has a post on using Clickbank.  She’s offering a free video she made on how to use it.

Well, I have no desire to even try it, ever again, but I want to list these products there.  So, I emailed Shawn and said “let’s talk about this.”  I’d rather hire her and have her maneuver through that maze than try to tackle it myself, at least at this time.  I’m learning to outsource, it’s only money after all.

If you are really serious about needing or wanting something, just putting that thought out into the universe will bring it to you.  Have you had this experience?  What do you need that you need to ask for right now?
